Survey shows US teens confident in their inventiveness; hands-on, project-based learning needed
01-16-2008 · EurekAlert!American teens are confident they can invent solutions to some of the world's pressing challenges, such as protecting and restoring the natural environment, but more than half feel unprepared for careers in technology and engineering, the Lemelson-MIT Invention Index has found this year. The Lemelson-MIT Invention Index, which gauges Americans' attitudes toward invention and innovation, also found there is an important need for more project-based learning in high schools.

A study released today by the University of Minnesota's "Project EAT" (Eating Among Teens) shows startling results of 2,500 female teenagers studied over a five-year period. The study found that high school-aged females' use of diet pills nearly doubled from 7.5 to 14.2 percent. By the ages of 19 and 20, 20 percent of females surveyed used diet pills.

A massive project to generate an all-color map of the galaxies in a small area of sky is yielding new information about the universe's "pre-teen" years and the early evolution of galaxies and galaxy clusters. The UC Berkeley-led AEGIS survey has already generated 19 papers set for publication this spring, reporting a binary black hole at the core of one galaxy, new lensing galaxies, and information about our universe as it matured through early adolescence.

The VCU Life Sciences Survey is the first poll to reflect the discovery reported internationally in November that human skin cells can be used to create stem cells or their near equivalents. When asked about the implications of this development, more than six in 10, or 63 percent, say that both embryonic and nonembryonic stem cell research is still needed, 22 percent say this development means embryonic stem cell research is no longer necessary.

Based on a survey of hundreds of pediatric nurses, researchers found that nurses who were more confident about their skills also were more likely to have received education in palliative care -- the practice of providing high-quality, responsive care to patients with a life-threatening illness.
