Adults who have recovered from the potentially deadly H5N1 strain of avian influenza may hold the key to future treatments for the virus, according to an international team of researchers. In a study published today in the open access journal PLoS Medicine, the researchers have shown how specific antibodies taken from avian flu survivors in Vietnam can be reproduced in the laboratory and prove effective at neutralising the virus in culture vitro and in mice.

Scientists have been trying to find the origin of Earth's adenine and where else it might exist in the solar system. University of Missouri-Columbia researcher Rainer Glaser may have the answer. Glaser is hypothesizing the existence of adenine in interstellar dust clouds. Those same clouds may have showered young Earth with adenine as it began cooling billions of years ago, and could potentially hold the key for initiating a similar process on another planet.

The ongoing drought in Australia is having at least one positive spin-off -- fewer carp are being distributed through inland waterways. NSW Department of Primary Industries' fisheries researchers at Narrandera are identifying carp 'hot spots' in conjunction with the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre. Known as the vermin of inland waterways, carp became a major pest in Australia in the 1970s and now make up 80 to 90 percent of the fish in inland NSW.
