Alendronate can help prevent bone fractures in many postmenopausal women
01-22-2008 · EurekAlert!Giving 10mg per day of the bisphosphate drug alendronate to women after their menopause can help prevent loss of bone mass, reducing their risk of fractures, a Cochrane Review has found. This finding applies to women who have started to lose their bone mass but have no fractures (primary prevention), as well as those who have lost significant bone mass and/or have had fractures (secondary prevention).

Data published today from a retrospective study of over 33,000 postmenopausal women showed that among patients newly prescribed one of the two most popular osteoporosis treatments, patients taking Actonel® (risedronate sodium) were approximately half as likely to sustain a hip fracture as those taking alendronate in the first year of treatment. These results were published today in the peer-reviewed journal Osteoporosis International.1
