Adult stem cell application effective in treatment of peripheric vascular disease
01-24-2008 · EurekAlert!Multipotent adult progenitor stem cells extracted from bone marrow, and known as MAPCs, have proved to be effective in the regeneration of blood vessel tissue and also in muscle tissue when treating peripheric vascular disease.

- Scientists produce neurons from human skin
02-22-2007 · EurekAlert!
Scientists from Université Laval's Faculty of Medicine have succeeded in producing neurons in vitro using stem cells extracted from adult human skin. This is the first time such an advanced state of nerve cell differentiation has been achieved from human skin, according to lead researcher Professor François Berthod. This breakthrough could eventually lead to revolutionary advances in the treatment of neurodegenerative illnesses such as Parkinson's disease.

- Reprogrammed adult cells treat sickle-cell anemia in mice
12-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
This is the first proof of principle for using adult cells reprogrammed to an embryonic-stem-cell-like state, combined with gene and cell therapy, for successful disease treatment in mice. Similar "induced pluripotent stem cells" were recently derived with human cells.

- Anticancer drugs might be of benefit to sickle-cell patients
12-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
Although some individuals with the inherited blood disorder sickle cell disease benefit from treatment with hydroxyurea, which increases fetal hemoglobin expression, it does not work for all sickle-cell patients. Now, hope for a new therapy has been provided by the observation that the anticancer drugs lenalidomide and pomalidomide were more effective than hydroxyurea at inducing HbF expression by red blood cells derived in vitro from CD34+ cells from both healthy and sickle-cell individuals.

- Researchers find stem-cell therapy effective in targeting metastatic cancer
12-20-2006 · EurekAlert!
Patients with advanced cancer that has spread to many different sites often do not have many treatment options, since they would be unable to tolerate the doses of treatment they would need to kill the tumors.

- Firefly genes allow testing of new therapy against lymphoma
12-19-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers here have figured out a way to use a firefly gene to let them see just how effective a new drug combination actually is against some forms of cancer and its serious complication. The new study looked at ATLL, adult T cell lymphoma and leukemia, a form of cancer where it is particularly hard to gauge the disease's progress, and where the patients' prognosis is generally poor. There is now no widely effective therapy available to treat this disease successfully.

12-13-2007 · EurekAlert!
High-dose chemotherapy and autologous stem cell transplantation, the controversial, arduous, yet once-popular combination treatment that fell out of favor as a therapy for breast cancer, has proven not to be beneficial as an adjuvant therapy for women with node-positive disease, according to an expansive analysis conducted by researchers at the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center.

- New drug therapy to combat GVHD in stem-cell patients shows significant reduction in deaths
01-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
Gastrointestinal graft-vs.-host disease is a common and potentially deadly side effect for patients who undergo an allogeneic stem-cell transplant to treat certain blood cancers. Now, new research from Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center shows that adding a widely used topical corticosteroid to the standard treatment for GVHD kept the disease in remission and significantly reduces deaths one year after therapy.
