CIHR news: U of S scientists find plant gene that affects stress resistance
01-25-2008 · EurekAlert!A University of Saskatchewan team of scientists funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research has isolated a gene that has never before been identified in helping plants to resist stress. The study -- published this month in the top-ranked plant journal The Plant Cell -- could pave the way for development of agricultural and forestry crops that are more tolerant to environmental stresses such as ultraviolet light and other types of radiation.

02-04-2008 · EurekAlert!
Scientists know that a number of factors can affect the body's immune system: poor diet, certain steroids, chronic stress. Now researchers at Michigan State University have discovered that an appetite-controlling hormone also affects the immune system, while natural versions of certain steroids do not.

- Iowa State scientists demonstrate first use of nanotechnology to enter plant cells
05-16-2007 · EurekAlert!
A team of Iowa State plant scientists and materials chemists are the first to use nanotechnology to penetrate plant cell walls and simultaneously deliver a gene and a chemical that triggers its expression with controlled precision. They modified an ISU proprietary technology-mesoporous silica nanoparticles-to work in plant cells. Their breakthrough creates a powerful new tool for targeted delivery into plant cells. The research was a highlighted article in the May issue of Nature Nanotechnology.

- Simulated crop provides answer to irrigation issues
07-12-2007 · EurekAlert!
South Asia's agricultural performance continues to be impressive, but evidence suggests that it's coming at a cost: their groundwater use for irrigation is becoming increasingly dangerous to the environment. Scientists found that plant growth is at risk of stunting due to poor water quality. Using a simulated crop, scientists determined how irrigation water pricing affects crop choices of Punjab farmers.

- Drug resistance gene has spread from East Coast to Midwest
09-19-2007 · EurekAlert!
A resistance gene that allows bacteria to beat an important class of antibiotics has started to appear in microorganisms taken from Midwestern patients, according to researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Less than a decade ago, scientists first noticed the BlaKPC gene in bacteria taken from East Coast patients. Bacteria with an active copy of the gene can defeat carbapenems, antibiotics reserved for use in the most critically ill patients.
