- Growth factor signals influence balance between normal growth and cancerous growth
11-09-2006 · EurekAlert!
Too much of a signaling protein called insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) may fan the flames of cancer, while too little of the protein may cause short stature, dementia and osteoporosis. New research investigates how the growth hormone/IGF system is affected by the important tumor suppressor gene p53. This interplay of two signaling pathways reinforces questions about the long-term risks of prescribing growth hormone, while suggesting a future new avenue for cancer therapy.

- Major link in brain-obesity puzzle found
01-29-2007 · EurekAlert!
A single protein in brain cells may act as a linchpin in the body's weight-regulating system, playing a key role in the flurry of signals that govern fat storage, sugar use, energy balance and weight, researchers report. And although it's far too early to say how this protein could be useful in fighting obesity, the finding gives scientists an important system to target in future research and the development of anti-obesity medications.

- Female academic performance lies in the (gender) balance
10-02-2007 · EurekAlert!
Have you ever felt outnumbered? Like there are just not that many people like you around? One group that may experience this kind of threat is women who participate in math, science and engineering settings -- settings in which the gender ratio is approximately three men to every one woman. New research shows that when women feel outnumbered, their academic performance expectations and actual performance decreases.

- Blocking cancer-causing gene improves radiation effectiveness, Jefferson researchers find
11-08-2006 · EurekAlert!
Inhibiting a particular cancer-causing gene can enhance the cell-killing effects of radiation, a team of radiation oncologists and cancer biologists has found. Using a combination of zebrafish and antisense technology, they've shown that the drug flavopiridol works by blocking the activity of a gene, cyclin D1, which is overexpressed in about half of all breast cancers. Similar techniques in the future, the scientists say, may enable researchers to better gauge the effects of drugs.
