Extraordinary life found around deep-sea gas seeps
11-20-2006 · EurekAlert! An international team led by scientists from the United States and New Zealand have observed, for the first time, the bizarre deep-sea communities living around methane seeps off New Zealand's east coast. This is the first time cold seeps have been viewed and sampled in the southwest Pacific. Cold seeps are areas of the seafloor where methane gas or hydrogen sulphide escapes from large stores deep below.

- The Milky Way shaped life on Earth
11-14-2006 · EurekAlert!
Frenzied star-making in the Milky Way Galaxy starting about 2,400 million years ago had extraordinary effects on life on Earth. Harvests of bacteria in the sea soared and crashed in a succession of booms and busts, with an instability not seen before or since.

- Long-lived deep-sea fishes imperiled by technology, overfishing
02-18-2007 · EurekAlert!
Many commercially prized fish from the depths of the world’s oceans are severely threatened by over-fishing and the species' ability to recover is constrained by the fishes' long lifespans and low reproductive success, a panel of experts said today at the annual meeting of the American Association of the Advancement of Science.

- From the deep -- Researchers find new species of sea anemone
05-16-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers cruising for creatures that live in the deepest parts of the Pacific Ocean found a new species of sea anemone living in the unlikeliest of habitats -- the carcass of a dead whale. A marine biologist would say that discovering a new sea anemone isn't so unusual. But finding one that calls a dead whale home is what sets this new creature apart.

12-11-2006 · EurekAlert!
New NCAR research indicates that Arctic sea ice will soon begin to retreat four times more rapidly than at any time since observations began. The Arctic may become nearly devoid of late summertime sea ice by about 2040 because of greenhouse gas emissions.

- Translational research patented first experimental treatment against idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis
12-21-2007 · EurekAlert!
This disease, which deteriorates the alveolar tissue, does not have an effective treatment. Fibrosis prevents correct gas exchange in lungs, worsening quickly the quality of life of patients and eventually leading them to death in few years. Innovative pneumocytes transplantation has reverted the disease for the first time in rats. A clinical study will proof in humans the effectiveness of this world patented cells suspension.
