The onchocerciasis parasite showing signs of resistance

01-31-2008 · EurekAlert!

Onchocerciasis is a parasitic infection brings about skin lesions and severe eye damage that might lead to irreversible blindness. A study published recently by IRD scientists, who monitored a cohort of patients treated with ivermectin, the sole drug used for curing infected people, found fertility-change associated genetic selection in parasite populations. Although the results do not prove with absolute certainty that Onchocerca volvulus is steadily becoming resistance to ivermectin, they do show that certain parasites are more sensitive to treatment than others.

    08-29-2007 · EurekAlert!
Recent reports of patients failing to respond to ivermectin, the standard drug for treating river blindness (onchocerciasis), have suggested the emergence of drug-resistant Onchocerca volvulus (the parasite that causes river blindness). According to a new study by Roger Prichard of McGill University, Canada, Ivermectin is causing genetic changes in the parasite.

Since the 1980s parasite forms have been appearing that are resistant to the main antimalarial treatments prescribed in the African countries. In Cameroon, where tracing the changes and developments of resistance is complicated by a diversity of landscapes and climates, IRD researchers and their OCEAC (Organisation de Coordination pour la lutte contre les endйmies en Afrique Centrale) partners compared, between 1999 and 2004, the efficacy of three standard monotherapies (chloroquine, amodiaquine and sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine) in children from 12 different localities.
