21st century water management: Calculating with the unknown
01-31-2008 · EurekAlert!Climate change is making a central assumption of water management obsolete: Water-resource risk assessment and planning are currently based on the notion that factors such as precipitation and streamflow fluctuate within an unchanging envelope of variability. But anthropogenic change of Earth's climate is altering the means and extremes of these factors so that this paradigm of stationarity no longer applies, researchers report in the latest issue of Science.

Scientists have today released new findings that could have major implications for food production and global warming in the 21st century. Experts from the Met Office, the University of Exeter and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, have found that projections of increasing ozone near the Earth’s surface could lead to significant reductions in regional plant production and crop yields. Surface ozone also damages plants, affecting their ability to soak up carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and accelerating global warming.

In the first-ever study to document the effects of ski resort development on water flows and quality in the northeastern US, University of Vermont researchers studied side-by-side watersheds on Mount Mansfield. Their results show greater-than-expected water volume from the developed watershed, suggesting that models derived from timber extraction studies may underestimate the hydrologic effects of resort development. This study provides baseline data that may contribute to new stormwater management approaches in mountainside development.

Rice University physicist Michael Deem is taking zeolite design into the 21st Century using a combination of supercomputers at the University of Texas at Austin and disused computing cycles from more than 4,300 idling desktop PCs at Purdue University to create a database containing more than 3.4 million atomic formulations of the porous silicate minerals. Zeolites -- there are 50-odd naturally occurring ones and about 180 synthetics -- are heavily used by chemical manufacturers.
