Ultra-intense laser blast creates true 'black metal'

11-21-2006 · EurekAlert!

"Black gold" is not just an expression anymore. Scientists at the University of Rochester have created a way to change the properties of almost any metal to render it, literally, black. The process, using an incredibly intense burst of laser light, holds the promise of making everything from fuel cells to a space telescope's detectors more efficient -- not to mention turning your car into the blackest black around.

  1. Researchers create gold aluminum, black platinum, blue silver
    01-31-2008 · EurekAlert!
Using a tabletop laser, a University of Rochester optical scientist has turned pure aluminum, gold. And blue. And gray. And many other colors. And it works for every metal tested, including platinum, titanium, tungsten, silver, and gold.

  2. Laser light creates black holes in the lab
    02-13-2008 · EurekAlert!
Imagine being able to peek inside a black hole and even perform experiments there. It may not be as far fetched as it sounds, thanks to a team which claims to have simulated a black hole's event horizon in the lab. This could allow physicist to examine what happens to light on both sides of an event horizon -- a feat that is utterly impossible in astrophysics.

  3. Feelings of self-worth impacted by advertisements
    10-26-2006 · EurekAlert!
New research explores the relationship between so called "thin-ideal" images in the media and body-image issues among young women. Female undergraduates who viewed advertisements displaying ultra-thin women exhibited increases in body dissatisfaction, negative mood, levels of depression and lowered self-esteem. These findings were particularly true for women who have negative views of their current body image and believe themselves to be overweight.

  4. Climate change creates dramatic decline in red-winged black bird population
    11-13-2006 · EurekAlert!
Global warming strikes again. A University of Illinois researcher reports that a red-winged black bird population in Ontario, Canada has decreased by 50 percent since 1972. The decrease is related to a positive shift in the North Atlantic Oscillation which has resulted in warmer, wetter winters in the southeastern United States.

  5. Gold nanorods shed light on new approach to fighting cancer
    10-16-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers have shown how tiny 'nanorods' of gold can be triggered by a laser beam to blast holes in the membranes of tumor cells, setting in motion a complex biochemical mechanism that leads to a tumor cell's self-destruction.

  6. Laser experiments reveal strange properties of superfluids
    12-21-2006 · EurekAlert!
Princeton University electrical engineers are using lasers to shed light on the behavior of superfluids -- strange, frictionless liquids that are difficult to create and study. Their technique allows them to simulate experiments that are difficult or impossible to conduct with superfluids.

    11-30-2006 · EurekAlert!
Using an ultra-stable laser to manipulate strontium atoms trapped in a "lattice" made of light, scientists at JILA (a joint institute of NIST and the University of Colorado at Boulder) have demonstrated the capability to produce the most precise "ticks" ever recorded in an optical atomic clock—techniques that may be useful in time keeping, precision measurements of high frequencies, and quantum computers using neutral atoms as bits of information.

  10. Mystery cosmic explosions
    12-20-2006 · EurekAlert!
Scientists have discovered what appears to be a new kind of cosmic explosion, the subject of four articles in this week's issue of Nature. They call the explosion a hybrid gamma-ray burst. As with other gamma-ray bursts, this hybrid burst is likely signalling the birth of a new black hole. It is unclear, however, what kind of object or objects exploded or merged to create the black hole or, perhaps, something even more bizarre.
