Patterns on tropical marine mollusk shell mirror gene expression patterns
11-21-2006 · EurekAlert!Scientists have identified a group of genes that control the formation of shapes and color patterns on the shell of the tropical marine mollusk referred to as "abalone." A study published today in the open access journal BMC Biology reveals that the shape and color patterns on the shell of the mollusc mirror the localised expression of specific genes in the mantle, a layer of skin situated just below the shell.

- Decoding effects of toxins on embryo development
10-24-2007 · EurekAlert!
Changes in gene expression patterns in zebrafish embryos resulting from exposure to environmental toxins can identify the individual toxins at work, according to research published in the online open access journal Genome Biology. The genetic response of zebrafish to each toxin can be read like a barcode, offering researchers a potential method for identifying the effects of the toxin on developing vertebrate embryos.

- Single molecule extends fat mice lives by reversing gene pathways associated with disease in obese
11-01-2006 · EurekAlert!
Researchers have used a single compound to increase the lifespan of obese mice, and found that the drug reversed nearly all of the changes in gene expression patterns found in mice on high calorie diets -- some of which are associated with diabetes, heart disease and other significant diseases related to obesity. The research is the first time that the small molecule resveratrol has been shown to offer survival benefits in a mammal.

- Unique pattern of gene expression can indicate acetaminophen overdose
10-31-2007 · EurekAlert!
In a new study, researchers found they could detect toxic levels of acetaminophen in laboratory animals by analyzing gene expression in the blood. This study by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health, could be a first step in developing accurate new tools to detect acetaminophen overdose in humans.

- The molecular signature of loneliness
09-12-2007 · EurekAlert!
People who experience chronically high levels of loneliness show gene-expression patterns that differ markedly from those of people who don't feel lonely, according to a new molecular analysis in the online open access journal Genome Biology. The findings suggest that feelings of social isolation are linked to alterations in immune system activity, which result in increased inflammatory signaling within the body.

- Gene expression profiling of dengue virus infection in cell lines and patients
11-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers at the Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases and the Genome Institute of Singapore have identified new host genes associated with dengue virus infection, which may open new avenues to developing a drug to treat the disease. The results suggest that drugs that target the host pathways may prove effective against dengue.

- Gene expression pattern could lead to improved treatment of pediatric septic shock
07-26-2007 · EurekAlert!
A consortium of researchers headed by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center has discovered a gene expression pattern that could lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of pediatric septic shock -- still a serious public health problem despite today's potent antibiotics and pediatric intensive care units.

- Exceptions prove rule of tropical importance in biodiversity
11-07-2007 · EurekAlert!
Even a group of shellfish that appear to violate the overarching pattern of global biodiversity actually follows the same biological rules as other marine organisms, confirming a general theory for the spread of life on Earth. The University of Chicago's David Jablonski and his colleagues present this finding in the Nov. 7 advanced online edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
