'Lab on a chip' mimics brain chemistry

Johns Hopkins researchers from the Whiting School of Engineering and the School of Medicine have devised a micro-scale tool -- a lab on a chip -- designed to mimic the chemical complexities of the brain. The system should help scientists better understand how nerve cells in the brain work together to form the nervous system.

The research, which was performed at Brookhaven Lab, showed that healthy men with lower levels of a particular brain enzyme exhibited more aggressive personality traits, as measured by a standard personality questionnaire.

Small, clever process technology is essential for the future, but is it possible? Dutch-sponsored researcher Fernando Benito López investigated the possibilities of the so-called lab-on-a-chip: microreactor chips in which chemical reactions can take place under (high) pressure. The results were very promising. The reaction rate increased compared to conventional equipment, the measurements were accurate and safety was not a problem. Moreover it was possible to follow and regulate the reaction during the process.

"Electrowetting" controls the contact angle of a liquid on a hydrophobic surface through the use of an electric field. Andrew Steckl's research on liquid-state-field-effect transistors promises improvements in such things as "lab on a chip" devices. These tiny devices, reminiscent of the "Fantastic Voyage," can be introduced into the blood stream to monitor the blood’s chemistry. Steckl calls it "liquid logic" -- using liquids to make electronic devices instead of solids.

An implanted stimulator being studied at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, may be able to predict and prevent seizures before they start in people with uncontrolled epilepsy. Researchers at the Jefferson Comprehensive Epilepsy Center, are enrolling patients in a study of the Responsive Neurostimulator System made by Neuropace, to determine if it is effective in stemming seizures. The system contains a computer chip that detects seizures and then delivers electric current to the brain to stop them.
