    08-03-2007 · EurekAlert!
Autistic children are doubly stigmatized. On the one hand, they are often dismissed as "low functioning" or mentally retarded, especially if they have poor speaking skills as many do. But when they display exceptional visual discrimination or memory for detail, they are dubbed "savants." New research in Psychological Science is discovering the level and nature of autistic intelligence.

  2. Gene mutation linked to increased athletic performance in whippets
    05-04-2007 · EurekAlert!
Whippets are bred for speed and have been clocked at speeds approaching 40 miles per hour. Scientists at the National Human Genome Research Institute have now discovered a genetic mutation that helps to explain why some whippets run even faster than others. Published in the open-access journal PLoS Genetics, their findings will make for a fascinating experiment in applied genetics.

  3. New study zeroes in on genetic roots of Alzheimer's
    04-10-2007 · EurekAlert!
Scientists have long known that individuals with a certain gene are at higher risk for developing Alzheimer's disease. Now a new study helps explain why this is so. The research, led by scientists at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, has uncovered a molecular mechanism that links the susceptibility gene to the process of Alzheimer's disease onset. The findings appear in the Journal of Neuroscience and may lead to new pathways for development of Alzheimer's therapeutics.

An international group of researchers has discovered that the mutated form of a gene called Palladin causes familial pancreatic cancer. The findings, published online today, Dec. 12, in the peer-reviewed journal PLoS-Medicine, may help explain why the disease is so deadly. The research project was led by Dr. Teri Brentnall, University of Washington associate professor of medicine, and supported by the Lustgarten Foundation, Canary Foundation and other private sources.
