Gene chips used to distinguish ventilator-associated pneumonia from underlying critical illness
02-12-2008 · EurekAlert!Critically ill patients who need a ventilator to breathe face a high risk of pneumonia. The lung infection, however, is exceedingly difficult to diagnose because a patient's underlying condition often skews laboratory test results and masks pneumonia's symptoms -- a reality that can delay appropriate antibiotic treatment.

- Biomarkers for inflammatory disease
12-05-2007 · EurekAlert!
Gene-expression profiles might be used to identify prognostic biomarkers for Kawasaki disease, and help to unravel the underlying biology of the illness, research published this week in the online open access journal Genome Biology reveals. The new findings also support the idea that gene-expression profiles might be used to generate biomarkers for other systemic inflammatory illnesses.

- Taking 'chips' to the next level of gene hunting
11-14-2006 · EurekAlert!
Researchers at the Johns Hopkins' High Throughput Biology Center have invented two new gene "chip" technologies that can be used to help identify otherwise elusive disease-causing mutations in the 97 percent of the genome long believed to be "junk."

- Single molecule extends fat mice lives by reversing gene pathways associated with disease in obese
11-01-2006 · EurekAlert!
Researchers have used a single compound to increase the lifespan of obese mice, and found that the drug reversed nearly all of the changes in gene expression patterns found in mice on high calorie diets -- some of which are associated with diabetes, heart disease and other significant diseases related to obesity. The research is the first time that the small molecule resveratrol has been shown to offer survival benefits in a mammal.

- Brown scientists map structure of DNA-doctoring protein complex
12-06-2006 · EurekAlert!
Mobile DNA, which inserts foreign genes into target cells, is a powerful force in the march of evolution and the spread of disease. Working with the lambda virus and E. coli bacteria, Brown University biologists have solved the structure of a six-protein complex critical to performing this gene-grafting surgery. The technique they developed could be used to reveal the structure of other critical protein complexes, landing the work on the cover of Molecular Cell.

- Virus widely used in gene therapy research yields important clues to genomic instability
05-31-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine say they have the ability to study the potential cause of genomic instability in sporadic cancers using a recombinant adeno-associated virus, a virus commonly used for gene therapy experiments. The results of their work are being presented at the 10th annual meeting of the American Society of Gene Therapy, May 30 to June 3 at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center, Seattle.

- Bacteria from patient's dental plaque causes ventilator-associated pneumonia
03-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
Patients admitted to a hospital's intensive care unit already are seriously ill, so the last thing they need is a new infection. Unfortunately, statistics show that as many as 25 percent of all patients admitted to the ICU and placed on ventilators develop pneumonia, which can be fatal. Ironically, it turns out that the patient’s own dental plaque is a major source of germs that cause ventilator-associated pneumonia.
