Laser light creates black holes in the lab
02-13-2008 · EurekAlert!Imagine being able to peek inside a black hole and even perform experiments there. It may not be as far fetched as it sounds, thanks to a team which claims to have simulated a black hole's event horizon in the lab. This could allow physicist to examine what happens to light on both sides of an event horizon -- a feat that is utterly impossible in astrophysics.

- Scientists reveal how supermassive black holes bind into pairs during galaxy mergers
06-07-2007 · EurekAlert!
Now, using supercomputers to simulate galaxy mergers, scientists at Stanford and elsewhere have seen the formation of a new type of structure-a central disk of gas that can be from a hundred to a few thousand light years wide and from a few hundred million to a billion solar masses. They report the first simulated formation of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) pair in the June 7 edition of Science Express, an online version of Science magazine.

- Ultra-intense laser blast creates true 'black metal'
11-21-2006 · EurekAlert!
"Black gold" is not just an expression anymore. Scientists at the University of Rochester have created a way to change the properties of almost any metal to render it, literally, black. The process, using an incredibly intense burst of laser light, holds the promise of making everything from fuel cells to a space telescope's detectors more efficient -- not to mention turning your car into the blackest black around.

- NASA scientists predict black hole light echo show
01-10-2008 · EurekAlert!
It's well known that black holes can slow time to a crawl and tidally stretch large objects into spaghetti-like strands. But according to new theoretical research from two NASA astrophysicists, the wrenching gravity just outside the outer boundary of a black hole can produce yet another bizarre effect: light echoes.

- Unusual supernovae may reveal intermediate-mass black holes in globular clusters
01-29-2008 · EurekAlert!
A strange and violent fate awaits a white dwarf star that wanders too close to a moderately massive black hole. According to a new study, the black hole's gravitational pull on the white dwarf would cause tidal forces sufficient to disrupt the stellar remnant and reignite nuclear burning in it, giving rise to a supernova explosion with an unusual appearance.

- Largest, brightest supernova ever seen may be long-sought pair-instability supernova
05-07-2007 · EurekAlert!
UC Berkeley astronomers Nathan Smith and David Pooley report the most luminous supernova ever detected, the explosion of a super-massive star in a galaxy 250 million light years away. The scientists estimate the star was 150 times larger than our sun, and that it exploded via an entirely new mechanism never before observed. Unlike other massive supernovas, this so-called pair instability supernova left behind no black hole.

- University of Minnesota astronomers find gaping hole in the Universe
08-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
University of Minnesota astronomers have found an enormous hole in the Universe, nearly a billion light-years across, empty of both normal matter such as stars, galaxies and gas, as well as the mysterious, unseen "dark matter." While earlier studies have shown holes, or voids, in the large-scale structure of the Universe, this new discovery dwarfs them all.

Integral is the first space observatory that can simultaneously observe objects in gamma rays, X-rays, and visible light. Its principal targets are gamma-ray bursts, powerful supernova explosions, and regions in the Universe thought to contain black holes. EuroNews talks to various scientists who are obtaining fascinating results from this laboratory.
