Scientists solve structure of gene regulator that plays key role in cancer
02-13-2008 · EurekAlert!Scientists at the Wistar Institute have collaborated on a major advance in understanding a gene regulator that contributes to some of the deadliest cancers in humans. Their research paves the way for the development of new cancer therapies. The scientists have elucidated the 3-D structure of a key segment of p300/CBP, one of the most studied enzymes in the HAT family. Aberrant p300/CBP activity contributes to pancreatic, colon, and lung cancer and also can suppress tumors.

Developmental biologists at Rice University have found that a gene called LMO4, which is known to play roles in both cell reproduction and in breast cancer, also plays a role in neurological development. By both knocking out and overexpressing the gene in zebrafish, the scientists determined that LMO4 independently regulates two other genes that are involved with the development of the forebrain and eyes. The results are slated to appear in the journal Developmental Biology.

An international team of researchers is reporting on a 10-year study of colon cancer among Israeli Jews and Arabs. The researchers, led by a team from the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center, discovered a genetic marker that increased a person's risk of colon cancer by 23 percent. At the same time, three other research teams are reporting similar findings involving the same gene, strengthening the likelihood that this particular marker plays a role in colon cancer.
