Students encouraged to think green

Students at the University of Bath are being encouraged to 'Switch it off, Turn it down, Keep it closed' as part of a week of events to raise awareness about simple ways to be more environmentally friendly. The Green Week will run from 27 November to 1 December.

    In a groundbreaking new study from the American Journal of Education, researchers from Princeton University and the University of Pennsylvania reveal that first- or second-generation immigrants comprise a disproportionately high percentage of the of black student population at US universities, with the percentage increasing in proportion to the selectivity of the institution. In the Ivy League, more than 40 percent of the black population is of immigrant origin, despite comprising just 13 percent of the black population overall.

    A study finds student use of social network sites such as Facebook and MySpace can be predicted by race, ethnicity and parent education, challenging popular notions of the democratic nature of online communication. The study finds less intermingling of users from diverse backgrounds on these sites than previously believed. White students prefer Facebook; Hispanics prefer MySpace. Asian and Asian-American students use less popular sites including Xanga more than other groups.
