Committee review of stem-cell fraud finds editors followed all rules
11-28-2006 · EurekAlert! In handling fraudulent stem-cell research articles, journal editors went above and beyond existing procedures to try and verify the findings, but in today's competitive publishing environment, more stringent, less trusting safeguards are now essential, an independent committee has concluded.

- Muscle stem cells effectively treat urinary incontinence long term
05-21-2007 · EurekAlert!
Women with stress urinary incontinence (SUI) treated using muscle-derived stem cell injections to strengthen their sphincter muscles experience long-term improvements in their condition, according to a study led by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center in Toronto. The study, which followed patients for more than one year, suggests that the approach is safe, improves patients' quality of life and may be an effective treatment for SUI.

- Cardiac stem cell therapy closer to reality
12-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
The current issue of Cell Transplantation is devoted to the "Proceedings of the Third Annual Conference on Cell Therapy for Cardiovascular Disease." Cardiac stem cell therapy involves delivering a variety of cells into hearts following myocardial infarction or chronic cardiomyopathy. An overview of current research and research goals is presented, followed by the results of studies aimed at improving implanted cell survival and the repair process, as well as several techniques aimed at improving efficacy.

- What are the challenges faced by research ethics committees in Africa?
01-22-2007 · EurekAlert!
International guidelines and many nations' laws mandate that research with humans requires prior approval from a research ethics committee (called an institutional review board or IRB in the US). A new study in PLoS Medicine examined how well these research ethics committees are functioning in Africa.

- Discovery of cardiac stem cells may advance regenerative heart therapy
11-22-2006 · EurekAlert!
An immediate early publication of the journal Cell, published by Cell Press, on Nov. 22, 2006, points to the possible existence of master cardiac stem cells with the capacity to produce all three major tissues of the mammalian heart. A companion Cell paper also published online reports the discovery of a second population of cardiac progenitors, which are capable of forming both cardiac muscle and the smooth muscle found in the heart's blood vessel walls.

02-13-2007 · EurekAlert!
Human nerve stem cells transplanted into rats' damaged spinal cords have survived, grown and in some cases connected with the rats' own spinal cord cells in a Johns Hopkins laboratory, overturning the long-held notion that spinal cords won't allow nerve repair.

- Study questions 'cancer stem cell' hypothesis in breast cancer
03-12-2007 · EurekAlert!
A Dana-Farber Cancer Institute study challenges the hypothesis that "cancer stem cells" -- a small number of self-renewing cells within a tumor -- are responsible for breast cancer progression and recurrence, and that wiping out these cells alone could cure the disease.

- When smell cells fail they call in stem cell reserves
04-29-2007 · EurekAlert!
Hopkins researchers have identified a backup supply of stem cells that can repair the most severe damage to the nerves responsible for our sense of smell. These reservists normally lie around and do nothing, but when neighboring cells die, the scientists say, the stem cells jump into action. A report on the discovery will appear online next week in Nature Neuroscience.
