Research yields new insights into the cause of diabetes
12-05-2006 · EurekAlert! The cause of insulin-dependent, permanent diabetes in newborn babies may be a deficiency in the PERK enzyme during a critical period of development before birth, according to a new hypothesis be published in the journal Cell Metabolism on Dec. 6, 2006. Using special strains of mice bred to be PERK-deficient, the researchers found that what happens during fetal development predisposes people either to be able to maintain glucose levels normally or to have diabetes.

- Depression may trigger diabetes in older adults
04-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
Chronic depression may cause diabetes in older adults, according to Northwestern University research. This is the first national study to suggest that depression alone -- and not lifestyle factors like being overweight -- can trigger diabetes in adults 65 and older, a population with a high prevalence of diabetes and depression. A high level of the stress hormone cortisol -- common in people who are depressed and which can decrease insulin sensitivity -- may be triggering the disease.

- Quick-burning carbs may cause fatty liver
09-20-2007 · EurekAlert!
The obesity epidemic has spawned not just diabetes, but another serious public health problem: a surge in fatty liver disease, which can lead to cirrhosis and liver failure. Now, research suggests that limiting consumption of high-glycemic-index carbohydrates can prevent the condition in mice. A clinical trial is now testing this idea in overweight adolescents, as well as the possibility of reversing fatty liver disease through diet.
