Ebola-outbreak kills 5000 gorillas
12-08-2006 · EurekAlert!Over the last decade human outbreaks of the deadly Ebola virus in Africa have been repeatedly linked to gorilla and chimpanzee deaths in nearby forests. Hotly debated has been whether these wild ape deaths were isolated incidents or part of a massive die-off. New research published in the journal Science puts this debate to rest, providing strong evidence that Ebola killed at least 5,000 gorillas at a single site.

- Ebola outbreaks killing thousands of gorillas and chimpanzees
04-16-2007 · EurekAlert!
Direct encounters between gorilla or chimpanzee social groups are rare, so, though Ebola has killed thousands, vaccination did not seem to be a solution. But transmission might occur in other ways. Many different gorilla groups feed in the same fruit tree on a single day. Gorillas from one social group inspect the carcasses of gorillas from other groups. This suggests that vaccination of individuals may prevent the chain of infection.

11-10-2006 · EurekAlert!
Scientists have found a way of using a protein made by prostate cancer to target and kill the cancer cells themselves. In preliminary studies the new therapy affected only the prostate, without causing damage to other healthy tissues, and now it is being tested in a phase I clinical trial, according to research presented at the 18th EORTC-NCI-AACR Symposium on Molecular Targets and Cancer Therapeutics in Prague on Friday.

- New designer toxins kill Bt-resistant insect pests
11-01-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new way to combat resistant pests stems from discovering how the widely-used natural insecticide Bt kills insects. Figuring out how Bt toxins punch holes in the cells of an insect's gut was the key to designing the new toxins, according to new research. Some pest insects have developed resistance to Bt toxins, naturally occurring insecticides used worldwide to combat both crop pests and disease-carrying mosquitoes.

Researchers have improved upon an edible coating for fresh fruits and vegetables by enabling it to kill deadly E. coli bacteria while also providing a flavor-boost to food. Composed of apple puree and oregano oil, which is a natural antibacterial agent, the coating shows promise in laboratory studies of becoming long-lasting alternative to conventional produce washes, according to a team of scientists from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the University of Lleida in Spain.

This colossus will be able to transport, at 5000 meter altitude, a 115-ton antenna and set it down on a concrete pad within millimeters of a prescribed position.
