Drug combination proves effective against myeloma in Phase I trial

Two "new generation" drugs for the bone marrow cancer multiple myeloma may work even better together than they do individually, according to the results of a multicenter Phase I clinical trial to be presented by Dana-Farber Cancer Institute scientists at the annual meeting of the American Society of Hematology in Orlando, Fla.

Researchers from the UPenn's Abramson Cancer Center announced today that findings from two international clinical trials show unprecedented survival for patients with myeloma, a cancer the blood-making cells of bone marrow. Findings show that with the oral drug lenalidomide, in combination with dexamethasone, patients significantly improved by all measures where previous treatments had failed -- including a median survival of nearly three years -- the longest median survival known for this difficult to treat patient group.

Researchers studied 22,500 patients enrolled in the landmark International Verapamil SR-Trandolapril study, known as INVEST, and tracked a subgroup of 5,017 Hispanic and 4,710 non-Hispanic white women who were randomly assigned to a drug strategy containing either a sustained release form of the calcium antagonist verapamil or the beta-blocker atenolol. Hispanic women achieved greater blood pressure control and were half as likely as white women to suffer adverse outcomes.

Phase I study of novel gene therapy for HIV

The results are in for Phase I clinical trials of a gene therapy for AIDS. The trial was conducted at U-Penn where five patients with chronic HIV who had failed prior therapies were given a one-time infusion. They all tolerated the therapy and showed improved immune system response. This is the first publication of an effective gene therapy for AIDS to show positive clinical results in the peer review literature.
