Analysis: Older men treated for early prostate cancer
12-12-2006 · EurekAlert!An analysis of Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results-Medicare records for 44,630 older men suggests surgery or radiation therapy for early-stage prostate cancer increased the lifespan of men between 65 and 80 years old compared to observation, sometimes known as "watch and wait." The study supported a benefit of treatment even for men whose disease had a low risk of spreading, and even if they were elderly men (75 to 80 years old).

Recent findings of an observational study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine suggest that men between 65-80 years of age who received treatment for early stage, localized prostate cancer lived significantly longer than men who did not receive treatment. The study will be published in the Dec. 13 issue of JAMA.

Doctors applied the new system to 1,831 previously treated patients. The new classification could alter the course of treatment, which may include hormone therapy sooner and for more men. The study demonstrates a significant improvement in predicting endpoints, including distant metastasis, cause-specific mortality and overall mortality.
