NASA ice images aid study of Pacific walrus arctic habitats

12-12-2006 · EurekAlert!

Changes in climate are causing alterations in sea ice formation resulting in a changing habitat for Pacific walrus. Researchers will present findings from a joint NASA-US Fish and Wildlife Service study that assessed the use of satellite imagery for studying walrus habitat on sea ice. American Geophysical Union meeting (session H23I-05), December 12 at 5:50 p.m. EST.

    06-12-2007 · EurekAlert!
The Marine Conservation Alliance supports action today by the North Pacific Fishery Management Council to close all federal waters north of the Bering Strait to commercial fishing until a management plan, including habitat protection, is fully developed."Climate change is having a significant effect on the Arctic, opening previously ice-covered waters and drawing cold water species further north," said MCA's Dave Benton. "The council is right to look at closing these waters as a precautionary measure."

  4. Investigating the invisible life in our environment
    02-01-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new computational method to analyse environmental DNA samples, developed by researchers at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, now sheds light on the microbial composition of different habitats, from soil to water. The study, which will be published in this week’s online issue of the journal Science, also reveals that microbes evolve faster in some environments than in others and that they rather rarely change their habitat preferences over time.
