New tool being tested at Penn to halt recurrence of atrial fibrillation

Clinical researchers at the University of Pennsylvania Health System are starting a trial utilizing a new mechanism to treat the heart when its electrical pulses essentially short-circuit, referred to as atrial fibrillation (A-Fib). The tool is a high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation system. It's the first to deliver energy bursts forward in a complete circle, all at once, from outside of the vein.

   Higher levels of a protein called S-100 in melanoma patients may correlate with a higher risk of the disease returning, say researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. The study tested serum samples from 103 patients treated with high-dose interferon an average of eight years prior. When the researchers examined levels of S-100 in the samples, they found that the higher the level of the protein, the greater likelihood the disease had returned.

    The results of this Cochrane Systematic Review showed that anti-coagulants were more successful than anti-platelet therapies at reducing stroke. They reduced the risk of a stroke in people with AF (atrial fibrillation) by about 33 percent compared with anti-platelet therapies. The anti-platelet therapies did, however, still have an effect, reducing the risk by 20 percent when compared to people who were given no treatment.
