New tool being tested at Penn to halt recurrence of atrial fibrillation
12-13-2006 · EurekAlert!Clinical researchers at the University of Pennsylvania Health System are starting a trial utilizing a new mechanism to treat the heart when its electrical pulses essentially short-circuit, referred to as atrial fibrillation (A-Fib). The tool is a high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) ablation system. It's the first to deliver energy bursts forward in a complete circle, all at once, from outside of the vein.

02-12-2007 · EurekAlert!
Physicians have an effective new option for treating atrial fibrillation, a common irregular heart rhythm that can cause stroke. Heart surgeons at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis have developed and tested a device that radically shortens and simplifies a complex surgical procedure that has had the best long-term cure rate for persistent atrial fibrillation.

- Protein may be linked to melanoma recurrence
06-02-2007 · EurekAlert!
Higher levels of a protein called S-100 in melanoma patients may correlate with a higher risk of the disease returning, say researchers at the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute. The study tested serum samples from 103 patients treated with high-dose interferon an average of eight years prior. When the researchers examined levels of S-100 in the samples, they found that the higher the level of the protein, the greater likelihood the disease had returned.

- Pulse pressure identified as important risk factor for atrial fibrillation
02-20-2007 · EurekAlert!
Increased pulse pressure (the difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressure) appears to be an important predictor of the risk for new onset atrial fibrillation, according to a study in the February 21 issue of JAMA.

- Ottawa aggressive protocol for acute atrial fibrillation is successful
05-16-2007 · EurekAlert!
There is no consensus on Emergency Department management of acute atrial fibrillation (AAF) or atrial flutter (AAFL). The Ottawa Aggressive Protocol, consisting of an IV procainamide infusion of 1 gram over 1 hour, electrical cardioversion, if necessary, by ED staff and discharge from the ED with outpatient cardiology follow-up, may be a safe and effective treatment for AAF and AAFL.

- Experimental vaccine protects mice against deadly 1918 flu virus
10-17-2006 · EurekAlert!
Federal scientists have developed a vaccine that protects mice against the killer 1918 influenza virus. They also have created a technique for identifying antibodies that neutralize this virus, a tool that could help contain future pandemic flu strains. These findings are important, the researchers say, to understanding and preventing the recurrence of the H1N1 influenza virus that caused the 1918 pandemic and to protecting against virulent flu strains in the future, including the H5N1 avian flu virus.

- Stroke in nonvascular atrial fibrillation -- anti-coagulants better than anti-platelet therapy
07-17-2007 · EurekAlert!
The results of this Cochrane Systematic Review showed that anti-coagulants were more successful than anti-platelet therapies at reducing stroke. They reduced the risk of a stroke in people with AF (atrial fibrillation) by about 33 percent compared with anti-platelet therapies. The anti-platelet therapies did, however, still have an effect, reducing the risk by 20 percent when compared to people who were given no treatment.
