Few Clues About African Ancestry To Be Found In Mitochondrial DNA
10-14-2006 · ScienceDailyMitochondrial DNA may not hold the key to your origins after all. A study published today in the open access journal BMC Biology reveals that fewer than 10 percent of African American mitochondrial DNA sequences analysed can be matched to mitochondrial DNA from one single African ethnic group. The current study suggests that only one in nine African Americans may be able to find clues about where their ancestors came from, in their mitochondrial DNA.

- DNA clues to inform conservation in Africa
05-22-2007 · EurekAlert!
Tracing the evolutionary history of wildlife could improve global habitat conservation, a major Cardiff University study has found. Researchers in the School of Biosciences analysed the African bushbuck -- a common species which lives in most sub-Saharan habitat types -- to test whether DNA similarity between populations living in different habitats can reveal the similarity of those ecoregions now and in the past.

- Genetic ancestral testing cannot deliver on its promise, study warns
10-18-2007 · EurekAlert!
For amateur genealogists and Americans searching for their roots, the prospect of tracking one's DNA to a specific country, region or tribe with a take-home kit is highly alluring. But while the popularity of genetic ancestral testing is rising -- particularly among African-Americans -- the technology is flawed and could spawn unwelcome societal consequences, according to researchers from several institutions nationwide, including UC Berkeley.

- Clues to future evolution of HIV come from African green monkeys
07-16-2007 · EurekAlert!
Monkey viruses related to HIV may have swept across Africa more recently than previously thought, according to research from the University of Arizona in Tucson. A new family tree for African green monkeys shows that simian immunodeficiency virus first infected those monkeys after the lineage split into four species. The new research reveals the split happened about 3 million years ago. Scientists had thought SIV infected an ancestor of green monkeys before the speciation event.

Pregnancies in Jerusalem in the 1960s and 1970s may hold vital clues about how pancreatic cancer and diabetes are linked. According to research published in the online open access journal BMC Medicine, women with a history of gestational diabetes had a higher risk of developing pancreatic cancer later in life.

DNA of the common black rat has shed light on the ancient spread of rats, people and diseases around the globe. Studying the mitochondrial DNA of 165 black rat specimens from 32 countries around the world, an international team of scientists has identified six distinct lineages in the black rat's family tree, each originating from a different part of Asia.

New research has identified the first genetic evidence of Africans having lived amongst "indigenous" British people for centuries. Their descendants, living across the UK today, were unaware of their black ancestry. The study found that one third of men with a rare Yorkshire surname carry a rare Y chromosome type previously found only amongst people of West African origin.
