USGS examines environmental impacts of aircraft de-icers

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has been examining the toxicity of formulations used to remove or prevent dangerous ice buildup on aircraft. A recent study has confirmed that proprietary additives are responsible for the observed toxicity. This USGS study compared nine different formulations. Some de-icers currently in use are safer for the environment than those used in the 1990. But the toxicity of anti-icers has not changed significantly.

    In a report in the December issue of PLOS Medicine, a group of researchers from the Partners AIDS Research Center at Massachusetts General Hospital report one of the first studies of how HIV infection impacts immune system functions involved with hepatitis C virus control. Their findings suggest that beginning antiretroviral therapy earlier than is generally recommended may help preserve HCV control in patients infected with both viruses.
