Diamonds from Outer Space: Geologists Discover Origin of Earth's Mysterious Black Diamonds

01-10-2007 · Brookhaven National Laboratory

The National Science Foundation has issued this news release about the discovery of the origin of Earth's so-called black diamonds. This research was performed at beamline U2B at Brookhaven's National Synchrotron Light Source (NSLS), where scientists used infrared light to analyze the diamonds' elemental makeup.

    01-09-2007 · EurekAlert!
If indeed "a diamond is forever," the most primitive origins of Earth's so-called black diamonds were in deep, universal time, geologists have discovered. Black diamonds came from none other than interstellar space.

  2. 'It might be life, Jim...', physicists discover inorganic dust with lifelike qualities
    08-14-2007 · EurekAlert!
Intriguing new evidence of lifelike structures that form from inorganic substances in space are revealed today in the New Journal of Physics. The findings hint at the possibility that life beyond earth may not necessarily use carbon-based molecules as its building blocks. They also point to a possible new explanation for the origin of life on earth.

  4. Astronomers discover new kind of black-hole explosion
    12-20-2006 · EurekAlert!
Scientists have discovered what appears to be a new kind of cosmic explosion -- a "hybrid gamma-ray burst" -- which will be the subject of four articles to be published in the journal Nature on 21 December 2006. The scientists include four astrophysicists at Penn State University as well as others around the globe. The nature of the explosion is a puzzle in "virtually uncharted territory" for space scientists.

  5. Auger Observatory closes in on mystery, links highest-energy cosmic rays with violent black holes
    11-08-2007 · EurekAlert!
The Pierre Auger Collaboration announced that active galactic nuclei are the most likely candidate for the source of the highest-energy cosmic rays that hit Earth. Using the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina, the team of scientists found that the sources of the highest-energy particles are not distributed uniformly across the sky. Instead, the Auger results link the origins of these mysterious particles to the locations of nearby galaxies that have active nuclei in their centers.

    01-08-2008 · EurekAlert!
A study released in the January 2008 edition of the journal Geology proves that a blue diamond's rare appeal goes far beyond its beauty. The study was conducted by Jeffrey Post, curator of the National Gem Collection and mineralogist, at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. Post and six other researchers probed the mysterious phosphorescence of the Hope Diamond and other natural blue diamonds and discovered a way to "fingerprint" individual blue diamonds.

    08-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
An edge-on view of Uranus' rings, possible only once every 42 years, shows that the dust distribution has changed significantly since Voyager 2 took photos in 1986. Keck and Hubble observations show the inner rings more clearly as the bright outer rings dim, and may discover new moons that shepherd the ring debris.

  10. Researchers find origin of 'breathable' atmosphere half a billion years ago
    10-28-2007 · EurekAlert!
Ohio State University geologists and their colleagues have uncovered evidence of when Earth may have first supported an oxygen-rich atmosphere similar to the one we breathe today. The study suggests that upheavals in the earth's crust initiated a kind of reverse-greenhouse effect 500 million years ago that cooled the world's oceans, spawned giant plankton blooms and sent a burst of oxygen into the atmosphere.
