Studying the DNA of 889 people, gene hunters at the Mayo Clinic and H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Centers have identified a region on chromosome 5p that is significantly associated with dense breast tissue, a known risk factor for breast cancer. The findings are published in the September 1 issue of Cancer Research, a publication of the American Association for Cancer Research.

The authors, from Imperial College London, measured the levels of vitamin D in the blood serum of 279 women with invasive breast cancer. The disease was in its early stages in 204 of the women, and advanced in the remaining 75.

A study of more than 2,200 women shows that African-Americans have more advanced breast cancer at the time of diagnosis than Caucasians. African-American women tend to have breast cancer tumor types that are more aggressive and have poorer prognoses. The findings are in line with other recent studies, and provide more evidence of the continuing need for early breast cancer screening for African-American women and the development of individual treatment strategies.
