New data supports a non-invasive approach to routine prenatal genetic testing
02-09-2007 · EurekAlert!Research studies demonstrating the viability of an approach to routinely detect the presence of fetal DNA in a mother's blood to accurately diagnose or rule out genetic defects -- as early as the first trimester -- was presented today at the 27th Annual Meeting of the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine being held in San Francisco.

- Noninvasive prenatal testing by analyzing mother's blood
09-20-2007 · EurekAlert!
Currently, prenatal diagnosis of genetic diseases and genetic monitoring of fetal development require invasive procedures. New data published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, has indicated that it might be possible to perform these processes noninvasively by analyzing fetal mRNAs in the blood of pregnant woman.

- New genetic test developed at Emory advances detection and diagnosis of muscular dystrophy
06-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new genetic test targeting the most common types of muscular dystrophy -- those caused by mutations in the dystrophin gene -- is far quicker with greater accuracy and sensitivity than existing tests. It can be used to confirm clinical diagnoses, to test female family members who may be carriers, and to perform prenatal testing.

- 'Network' approach identifies potential breast cancer susceptibility gene
10-09-2007 · EurekAlert!
Like a crossword-puzzle solver who uses the letters in some answers to figure out others, researchers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and an international group of collaborators have used data on genes involved in inherited forms of breast cancer to identify a gene linked to non-hereditary cases of the disease.

- Rare example of Darwinism seen in action
07-31-2007 · EurekAlert!
A research team, including UC Riverside biologists, has found experimental evidence that supports a controversial theory of genetic conflict in the reproduction of those animals that support their developing offspring through a placenta. The conflict has been likened to a "battle of the sexes" or an "arms race" at the molecular level between mothers and fathers. At stake: the fetus's growth rate and how much that costs the nutrient-supplying mother.

- Environmental setting of human migrations in the circum-Pacific Region
10-10-2007 · EurekAlert!
This new study adds insight into the migration of anatomically modern humans out of Africa and into Asia less than 100,000 years before present. The comprehensive review of human genetic, environmental and archaeological data from the circum-Pacific region supports the hypothesis that modern humans migrated into eastern Asia via a southern coastal route.

- Simple diagnostic test detects genetic signs of lung cancer in a patient's sputum
01-18-2007 · EurekAlert!
DNA coughed up along with phlegm could point to lung cancer, say researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine who are developing an inexpensive and non-invasive gene probe to help diagnose early stage lung cancer in current and former smokers.

- ACMG recognizes progress made in newborn screening
07-12-2007 · EurekAlert!
In support of the latest March of Dimes Newborn Screening Report Card, the American College of Medical Genetics urges every state to require complete testing of all newborns for a "core panel" of genetic and congenital conditions. Currently more than 500,000 babies annually are still not screened for the full panel of debilitating or life-threatening disorders. In many of these diseases, serious complications such as death or mental retardation are avoidable only through newborn screening, with appropriate follow-up and treatment.

- Is ultrasound as useful as we think?
08-16-2007 · EurekAlert!
In a recent article published in Ultrasound, the Journal of the British Medical Ultrasound Society (Vol. 15, Number 3, 2007), Dr. Hylton Meire raises the possibility that ultrasound is not as useful as has been suggested. He particularly emphasises the lack of scientific data to support the use of fetal "nuchal thickness" measurements in routine clinical ultrasound practice to ascertain the presence of Down's syndrome.

- Should children be permitted to get genetic testing for BRCA 1/2 mutations?
01-15-2008 · EurekAlert!
It's an ethical dilemma with serious implications. Should children be tested for gene mutations that predispose them to developing breast cancer and/or ovarian cancer later in life? New research suggests the next generation of parents may support testing minors even when any steps to reduce that risk will be postponed until adulthood -- a finding that challenges current policies.
