Scientists using NASA satellites have discovered an extensive network of waterways beneath a fast-moving Antarctic ice stream and clues as to how "leaks" in the system impact sea level and the world's largest ice sheet. Antarctica holds about 90 percent of the world's ice and 70 percent of the world's reservoir of fresh water.

In a mission of unprecedented scale, scientists are about to cover West Antarctica with a network of sensors to monitor the interactions between the ice and the earth below -- 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The National Science Foundation just awarded the collaboration, called POLENET, $4.5 million to plant global positioning system trackers and seismic sensors on the bedrock that cradles the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

The first evidence of a volcanic eruption from beneath Antarctica's most rapidly changing ice sheet is reported this week in the journal Nature Geosciences. The volcano on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet erupted 2,000 years ago and remains active. Using airborne ice-sounding radar, scientists from British Antarctic Survey discovered a layer of ash produced by a 'subglacial' volcano. It extends across an area larger than Wales.

Lightweight surgical robots being developed for the battlefield might also be used in space. The UW's surgical robot, Raven, will participate in NASA's mission to submerge a surgeon, astronaut and robotic gear. For 12 days in May the system will be put through its paces in an underwater capsule that mimics conditions in a space shuttle.
