    02-15-2007 · EurekAlert!
The recent discovery of a subglacial water system beneath the West Antarctic ice sheet (WAIS) is causing scientists to rethink the mechanisms that control the flow of ice streams into the Ross Ice Shelf and ultimately into the Southern Ocean, according to a report in the February 15, 2007, issue of Science magazine online.

This animation, comprised of images acquired by Envisat's Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) instrument, shows the breaking away of a giant iceberg from the Pine Island Glacier in West Antarctica. Spanning 34 km in length by 20 km in width, the new iceberg covers an area nearly half the size of Greater London.

  4. Joint NASA study reveals leaks in Antarctic 'plumbing system'
    02-15-2007 · EurekAlert!
Scientists using NASA satellites have discovered an extensive network of waterways beneath a fast-moving Antarctic ice stream and clues as to how "leaks" in the system impact sea level and the world's largest ice sheet. Antarctica holds about 90 percent of the world's ice and 70 percent of the world's reservoir of fresh water.

  5. West Antarctic to be covered with scientific instruments; network to watch through dark polar night
    12-10-2007 · EurekAlert!
In a mission of unprecedented scale, scientists are about to cover West Antarctica with a network of sensors to monitor the interactions between the ice and the earth below -- 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The National Science Foundation just awarded the collaboration, called POLENET, $4.5 million to plant global positioning system trackers and seismic sensors on the bedrock that cradles the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

  6. Antarctic ice sheet's hidden lakes speed ice flow into ocean, may disrupt climate
    03-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
In a new study, researchers have unearthed how water from a vast subglacial system contributes to the formation of ice streams, and how it plays a crucial role in transporting ice from the remote interior of Antarctica toward the surrounding ocean. Water flowing from this network of under-ice lakes, they say, ultimately affects climate and global sea level.

  7. First evidence of under-ice volcanic eruption in Antarctica
    01-20-2008 · EurekAlert!
The first evidence of a volcanic eruption from beneath Antarctica's most rapidly changing ice sheet is reported this week in the journal Nature Geosciences. The volcano on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet erupted 2,000 years ago and remains active. Using airborne ice-sounding radar, scientists from British Antarctic Survey discovered a layer of ash produced by a 'subglacial' volcano. It extends across an area larger than Wales.

  10. Changes in west coast marine ecosystems significant
    02-16-2007 · EurekAlert!
The California Current system has experienced significant changes during the past decade, resulting in dramatic variations in the ecosystem, characterized by shifts in phytoplankton production, expanding hypoxic zones, and the collapse of marine food webs off the western coast of the United States. These changes, driven by new wind patterns, are consistent with predictive models of global climate change.
