Strain has major effect on high-temp superconductors
02-15-2007 · EurekAlert!Just a little mechanical strain can cause a large drop in the maximum current carried by high-temperature superconductors, according to novel measurements carried out by NIST. The effect adds a new dimension to designing superconducting systems and it also provides a new tool that will help scientists probe the fundamental mechanism behind why these materials carry current with no resistance.

- Appalachian Mountains, carbon dioxide caused long-ago global cooling
10-25-2006 · EurekAlert!
The rise of the Appalachian Mountains may have caused a major ice age approximately 450 million years ago, an Ohio State University study has found. The weathering of the mountains pulled carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere, causing the opposite of a greenhouse effect -- an "icehouse" effect.

- Gender may play role in recovery from pneumonia after ozone exposure
06-25-2007 · EurekAlert!
Does air pollution have a bigger effect on the immune system of females than males? It did among mice exposed to ozone -- a major component in air pollution that is known to negatively affect lung function -- and then infected with pneumonia, as significantly more females died from the infection than males.

11-14-2007 · EurekAlert!
A research team led by Dr. Ke-Qin Hu at the University of California, Irvine, demonstrated the significant anti-cancer effects of milk thistle. They found that the major biologically active compound of this plant, silibinin, could suppress the growth of cancerous liver cells. These scientists further studied the mechanisms of the anti-cancer effects of silibinin.
