- Bypassing eggs, flu vaccine grown in insect cells shows promise
04-10-2007 · EurekAlert!
An experimental flu vaccine made in insect cells -- not in eggs, where flu vaccines currently available in the United States are grown -- is safe and as effective as conventional vaccines in protecting people against the flu. Removing eggs from the flu vaccine manufacturing process could allow a vaccine to be produced in large amounts much more quickly, a key advantage if a bird flu pandemic were to occur.

- Drug resistance in an influenza pandemic
01-22-2007 · EurekAlert!
Stockpiling large amounts of oseltamivir (Tamiflu) and related antiviral drugs with the intent to treat a large fraction of the population is a key part of pandemic preparedness of many countries. However, it is known that influenza viruses can develop resistance to these drugs. New research suggests that wide-spread use of antiviral drugs during a pandemic carries a substantial risk of resistance emerging and resistant influenza strains causing illness in a substantial number of people.

- Combination of drugs should be stockpiled to fight flu pandemic, say experts
02-08-2007 · EurekAlert!
A combination of antiviral drugs should be stockpiled for use in an influenza pandemic, say researchers in this week's BMJ. We currently have two classes of drugs that are effective against influenza viruses: the ion channel inhibitors (amantadine and rimantadine) and the neuraminidase inhibitors (oseltamivir and zanamivir).

- Hepatitis B drug can compromise HIV treatment
06-20-2007 · EurekAlert!
Treating hepatitis B patients with the drug entecavir can cause those who are also infected with HIV to become resistant to two of the most important drugs in the anti-HIV arsenal. In findings published in the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers reported that a patient infected with both hepatitis B and HIV who was treated with entecavir developed a mutant strain of HIV that is resistant to the antiviral drugs lamivudine and emtricitabine.
