Cellulosic ethanol: Fuel of the future?
02-16-2007 · EurekAlert! In his 2007 State of the Union address, President Bush outlined his plan to reduce the nation's dependency on foreign oil by requiring the production of 35 billion gallons a year of renewable and alternative fuels by 2017. One way to reach this goal is offered by Chris Somerville, professor of biological sciences at Stanford University and director of the Carnegie Institution's Department of Plant Biology, who advocates increasing the production of cellulosic ethanol.

- With cellulosic ethanol, there is no food vs. fuel debate according to MSU scientist
03-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
As more and more corn grain is diverted to make ethanol, there have been public concerns about food shortages. However, ethanol made from cellulosic materials instead of corn grain, renders the food vs. fuel debate moot, according to research by a Michigan State University ethanol expert.

03-04-2007 · EurekAlert!
On the road to making biofuels more economically competitive with fossil fuels, there are significant potholes to negotiate. For cellulosic ethanol production, one major detour has being addressed with the characterization of the genetic blueprint of the fungus Pichia stipitis, by the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (DOE JGI) and collaborators at the U.S. Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory. The research is featured in the March 4 advanced online publication of Nature Biotechnology.

- Iowa State researcher studies the sustainability of the bioeconomy
08-30-2007 · EurekAlert!
Will a bioeconomy that produces fuel and chemicals from biorenewable resources be sustainable? Robert Anex, an Iowa State associate professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering, is leading several studies looking for some answers. One study found an integrated process for producing ethanol from plant fiber could recycle plant nutrients back to the soil. Another project has developed a Web tool that helps farmers simulate how biomass production could affect their operations.

01-29-2007 · Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
President Bush called on fuel makers to produce 35 billion gallons of alternative fuels a year by 2017. That's not going to happen using corn as the basis for ethanol, said Ernest J. Moniz, director of the MIT Energy Initiative.

- Cleaner manure burns hotter in ethanol processing
05-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
Clean manure may sound like an oxymoron, but Dr. Brent Auvermann is working with feedyard owners to help them get the most "spark" from it as a fuel source. Auvermann, a Texas Cooperative Extension engineering specialist, hosted "Producing High-Value Manure for BioFuels and Fertilizer" recently in Hereford. The meeting outlined work by Texas Agricultural Experiment Station researchers to determine best management practices for scraping manure from the feed pens.

01-30-2008 · EurekAlert!
Iowa State University's Peter Reilly is working to understand how the structures of enzymes influence their mechanism and activity in breaking down cellulose. His work is opening doors for new and better applications of enzymes. Better enzymes, for example, could be a key to making the production of cellulosic ethanol more efficient and more economical.
