High-quality helium crystals show supersolid behavior

02-17-2007 · EurekAlert!

High-quality, single-crystal, ultra-cold solid helium exhibits supersolid behavior, suggesting that this frictionless solid flow is not a consequence of defects and grain boundaries in poor-quality, polycrystalline, solid helium, according to a team of Penn State researchers.

  1. Center-based care yields more behavior problems; in other types of care, problems short-lived
    03-26-2007 · EurekAlert!
New data from a federally-funded longitudinal study show that that children who spent more time in center-based childcare exhibited more problem behavior through sixth grade. Quality of parenting was found to be a stronger and more consistent predictor of social functioning and achievement than early childcare experiences. Higher quality early childcare was also associated with better vocabularies through fifth grade. The study highlights some of the potential enduring effects of childcare and the implications.

  2. Liquid crystals stabilized
    01-30-2007 · EurekAlert!
Dutch-sponsored researcher Ioan Paraschiv has stabilised new columnar discotic liquid crystals by making use of hydrogen bonds. This stabilisation approach yielded well-ordered, column-shaped aggregates that can transport charges. Liquid crystals are materials that combine the properties of a liquid with those of crystalline solids. They show a middle phase, known as mesophase or liquid crystalline phase, in which the material has unique characteristics that can be used in liquid crystal display (LCD) screens and solar cells.

  3. Tiny DNA Molecules Show Liquid Crystal Phases, Pointing To New Scenario For First Life On Earth
    11-22-2007 · Brookhaven National Laboratory
A team led by the University of Colorado at Boulder and the University of Milan has discovered some unexpected forms of liquid crystals of ultrashort DNA molecules immersed in water, providing a new scenario for a key step in the emergence of life on Earth.

  4. When is a supersolid not quite so super?
    10-24-2006 · EurekAlert!
Brown University physicist Humphrey Maris and colleagues Satoshi Sasaki and Sebastien Balibar of the l'Ecole Normale Supйrieure have narrowed the field of possible explanations for the weird behavior of supersolid helium. Their simple but extremely revealing experiment suggests that movement along grain boundaries is a more plausible explanation than Bose-Einstein condensates.

  5. Repeat treatment with MabThera provides continuous improvement of quality of life in RA patients
    11-11-2006 · EurekAlert!
Data presented at this year's American College of Rheumatology Congress (ACR) show that patients receiving repeat treatment with MabThera/Rituxan (rituximab) achieved continued improvement in both physical and mental aspects of quality of life measures. In addition, a higher proportion of patients achieved a significant improvement in disease symptoms with a second course of MabThera, compared to the first course they received.

  6. High-quality adolescent friendships may come at a cost for youth with shared deviant values
    09-28-2007 · EurekAlert!
This study found that the quality of interactions in adolescent peer relationships (such as good eye contact and responsiveness), is related to incidences of problem behavior. Three groups of adolescents representing different histories of problem behavior were observed for this study. Adolescents who had high quality interactions with peers but who also spent a lot of time talking about deviant topics, had higher levels of problem behavior.

    11-19-2007 · EurekAlert!
New studies show that there is a demonstrable correlation between a person's housing status and his or her likelihood of transmitting or getting HIV. The groundbreaking research from the Centers for Disease Control and others has been reported in a special issue of the journal AIDS and Behavior.

  8. This is your brain on violent media
    12-05-2007 · EurekAlert!
Columbia scientists show that a brain network responsible for suppressing behaviors like inappropriate or unwarranted aggression became less active after study subjects watched several short clips from popular movies depicting acts of violence. These changes could render people less able to control their own aggressive behavior.

    10-23-2006 · EurekAlert!
When a female animal compares males to choose a mate, she can't order a laboratory genetic screen for each suitor. Instead, she has to rely on external cues that may indicate genetic quality. Until now, biologists have focused on elaborate ornaments, such as the peacock's tail, as cues that females might use.
