NASA scientists detect spectrum of planets orbiting other stars
02-22-2007 · EurekAlert! For the first time, scientists at Goddard have obtained a spectrum, or molecular fingerprint, of a planet orbiting another star. Using spectroscopy, scientists were able to identify silicon dust in clouds on a gas-giant planet called HD 209458b. That planet is located 150 light years from Earth.

- Stellar forensics with striking new image from Chandra
10-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
A spectacular new image shows how complex a star's afterlife can be. By studying the details of this image made from a long observation by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, astronomers can better understand how some stars die and disperse elements like oxygen into the next generation of stars and planets.

- Arizona State University scientist finds Martian ice is patchy and variable
05-02-2007 · EurekAlert!
For the first time, scientists have found that water ice lies at variable depths over small-scale patches on the Red Planet. The discovery draws a much more detailed picture of underground ice on Mars than was previously available. The new results, by a researcher in Arizona State University's School of Earth and Space Exploration, will appear in Nature. The findings come from data sent back to Earth by THEMIS on NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter.

- Astronomers First To Measure Night And Day On Extrasolar Planet
10-12-2006 · ScienceDaily
University of Central Florida Astronomy professor Joseph Harrington and University of California at Los Angeles professor Brad M. Hansen and their team have made the first direct observation of distinct day and night temperatures on a planet orbiting another star. UCF Professor Joseph Harrington says that studying planetary atmospheres under such exotic conditions puts terrestrial and solar-system meteorology into a universal context, which aids in our understanding of weather on all planets.

- Planet orbiting a giant red star discovered with hobby-eberly telescope
08-02-2007 · EurekAlert!
A planet orbiting a giant red star has been discovered by an astronomy team led by Penn State's Alex Wolszczan, who in 1992 discovered the first planets ever found outside our solar system. The new discovery is helping astronomers to understand what will happen to the planets in our solar system when our Sun becomes a red-giant star, expanding so much that its surface will reach as far as Earth's orbit.
