Positive results more likely from industry-funded breast cancer trials
02-26-2007 · EurekAlert!Industry-funded studies of breast cancer therapies are more likely to report positive results than non-pharmaceutical funded studies, researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute have found. In addition, significant differences exist in the design and nature of clinical trials supported by the pharmaceutical industry compared to trials without industry involvement.

The results are in for Phase I clinical trials of a gene therapy for AIDS. The trial was conducted at U-Penn where five patients with chronic HIV who had failed prior therapies were given a one-time infusion. They all tolerated the therapy and showed improved immune system response. This is the first publication of an effective gene therapy for AIDS to show positive clinical results in the peer review literature.
