TU Delft proves that seismic noise measurements work in practice

02-27-2007 · EurekAlert!

Background noise from the earth can provide a wealth of information about the earth's crust, which can, for example, be used when searching for new oil fields. Researchers from TU Delft have tested this relatively new discovery in a desert in the Middle East. The seismic noise measurements have shown that the theory works in practice. An article about this research subject has been published in Geophysical Research Letters Feb. 22.

  1. Housewives are more ecologically aware and recycle more than university students
    12-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
Research carried out at the University of Granada reveals that housewives are more willing to separate glass from other garbage than students. According to this work, a high awareness of the environment does not necessarily entail the practice of ecologically responsible behavior. Research was carried out from a sample of 525 university students and 154 housewives.

  2. Delft University of Technology shines light on atomic transistor
    11-22-2006 · EurekAlert!
Researchers from TU Delft and FOM Foundation have successfully measured transport through a single atom in a transistor. This research offers new insights into the behaviour of so-called dopant atoms in silicon. The researchers are able to measure and manipulate a single dopant atom in a realistic semi-conducting environment. The individual behaviour of dopant atoms is a stumbling block to the further miniaturisation of electronics. The work is published in Physical Review Letters.

    02-01-2008 · EurekAlert!
Led by the world's three major producers of biofuels, an international effort seeks to harmonize standards for bioethanol and biodiesel, two key renewable energy sources and important commodities in the global marketplace. A report identifying standards differences is the first step. Next is for the US and Brazilian national measurement labs to address those differences and work toward worldwide compatibility of biofuels standards.

  4. Premature births may be linked to seasonal levels of pesticides and nitrates in surface water
    05-07-2007 · EurekAlert!
The growing premature birth rate in the United States appears to be strongly associated with increased use of pesticides and nitrates, according to work conducted by Paul Winchester, M.D., of Indiana University School of Medicine. Preterm birth rates peaked when pesticides and nitrates measurements in surface water were highest -- April-July -- and were lowest when nitrates and pesticides were lowest -- August-September.
