Single genetic defect causes early heart disease
03-01-2007 · EurekAlert!A team of researchers from the United States and Iran has identified a genetic mutation that causes early onset coronary artery disease in members of a large Iranian family. The genetic mutation leads to heart disease by causing high blood pressure, high blood levels of "bad cholesterol" and diabetes, all risk factors for heart disease. Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death worldwide.

The disease familial combined hyperlipidemia is a common cause of disturbed metabolism of fat and early heart attacks. Swedish scientists have now developed a pioneering method and can show for the first time what genes are regulated by the gene USF1, which is known to cause the disease.

- UD researchers discover technique for repairing gene defect that causes spinal muscular atrophy
02-11-2008 · EurekAlert!
Researchers at the University of Delaware have discovered a novel technique -- that acts like a "spell-checker" for correcting a misspelling in the DNA code -- to repair the defective gene that causes spinal muscular atrophy. This hereditary neuromuscular disease is the number-one genetic killer of children under two years old.

Researchers have discovered that a treatment involving enzyme replacement therapy dramatically reduces the risk of death in children with Pompe disease, a rare genetic disorder in which most children die before their first birthday. The disorder causes profound muscle weakness and heart and breathing problems and affects as many as one in 40,000 births. The study is published in the online edition of Neurology, the scientific journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
