New coating is virtual black hole for reflections

Researchers have created an anti-reflective coating that allows light to travel through it, but lets almost none bounce off its surface. At least 10 times more effective than the coating on sunglasses or computer monitors, the material, which is made of silica nanorods, may be used to channel light into solar cells or allow more photons to surge through the surface of a light-emitting diode (LED).

    UC Berkeley astronomers Nathan Smith and David Pooley report the most luminous supernova ever detected, the explosion of a super-massive star in a galaxy 250 million light years away. The scientists estimate the star was 150 times larger than our sun, and that it exploded via an entirely new mechanism never before observed. Unlike other massive supernovas, this so-called pair instability supernova left behind no black hole.

    Now, using supercomputers to simulate galaxy mergers, scientists at Stanford and elsewhere have seen the formation of a new type of structure-a central disk of gas that can be from a hundred to a few thousand light years wide and from a few hundred million to a billion solar masses. They report the first simulated formation of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) pair in the June 7 edition of Science Express, an online version of Science magazine.

    Scientists have discovered what appears to be a new kind of cosmic explosion -- a "hybrid gamma-ray burst" -- which will be the subject of four articles to be published in the journal Nature on 21 December 2006. The scientists include four astrophysicists at Penn State University as well as others around the globe. The nature of the explosion is a puzzle in "virtually uncharted territory" for space scientists.

    So far we have thought that the signature of the death of a massive star was an energetic explosion called a "supernova." New observations show that this is not always the case. On the contrary, a team led by Danish researchers has now discovered that some massive stars die by collapsing into a black hole returning very little material into the interstellar medium. The new discovery is published in Nature.
