How eating less might make you live longer

03-05-2007 · EurekAlert!

Caloric restriction in non-obese people translates into less oxidative damage in muscle cells, according to a new study by Anthony Civitarese, Eric Ravussin and colleagues (Pennington Biomedical Research Center). As oxidative damage has been linked to aging, this could explain how limiting calorie intake without malnutrition extends life span.

  1. Leading researchers to reveal comprehensive dos and don'ts for prostate cancer
    10-13-2007 · EurekAlert!
Researchers will share new research on how eating common foods such as tomatoes and fish, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding meats cooked at high temperatures may help prevent prostate cancer, and help men live healthier and longer after diagnosis. More widespread studies, in combination with newer technologies in gene research, are substantiating some long-held hypotheses.

  2. Molecules may help predict survival in liver cancer
    01-30-2008 · EurekAlert!
Tiny molecules that help cells regulate which proteins they make might one day help doctors predict which liver-cancer patients are likely to live longer than others. Researchers compared levels of microRNA in tumor cells and adjacent nontumor cells from liver-cancer patients, most of whom also had hepatitis and cirrhosis. Patients with poor disease-free survival had low overall levels of 19 particular microRNAs compared with those showing better survival after 16 years of follow-up.

  3. 4 health behaviors can add 14 extra years of life
    01-07-2008 · EurekAlert!
People who adopt four healthy behaviours -- not smoking; taking exercise; moderate alcohol intake; and eating five servings of fruit and vegetables a day -- live on average an additional 14 years of life compared with people who adopt none of these behaviors, according to a study published in the open access journal PLoS Medicine.

  4. Moderate drinking may help older women live longer
    12-13-2006 · EurekAlert!
A study published in Journal of the American Geriatrics Society finds that moderate alcohol intake (1-2 drinks/day for 3-6 days/week, depending on alcoholic content) may lead to increased quality of life and survival in older women. The Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health followed nearly 12,000 women in their 70's over a six-year period. The group was comprised of non-drinkers, occasional drinkers and moderate drinkers.

  5. Change in neuroticism tied to mortality rates, researcher says
    04-16-2007 · EurekAlert!
While mellowing with age has often been thought to have positive effects, a Purdue University researcher has shown that doing so could also help you live longer. Dan Mroczek's study compared neurotic and non-neurotic men over time and tied change in the trait with mortality. Those whose levels dropped had a better chance at living longer, while those whose levels increased died much sooner than their peers.

  6. New tumour markers -- 'Spot the differences'
    06-20-2007 · EurekAlert!
Pancreatic cancer (PC), the subject of this thesis, has the poorest prognosis of all cancers: the survival rate after five years with the disease is less than five percent and on average, patients who have been diagnosed with it do not live longer than six months.

  7. Avoiding sweets may spell a longer life, study in worms suggests
    10-02-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new study in the October issue of Cell Metabolism, a publication of Cell Press, reveals that worms live to an older age when they are unable to process the simple sugar glucose. Glucose is a primary source of energy for the body, and can be found in all major dietary carbohydrates as a component of starches and other forms of sugar, including sucrose and lactose.

  8. Meat and two neutrons -- the key to a longer life
    03-25-2007 · EurekAlert!
Eating meat enhanced with isotopes could add as much as 10 years to your life. Scientists have shown for the first time that food enriched with natural isotopes builds bodily components that are more resistant to the processes of aging. The concept has been demonstrated in worms and researchers hope that the same concept can help extend human life and reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases of ageing.
