A CSIRO research team has pinpointed the genetic difference between red (or black) and white grapes -- a discovery which could lead to the production of new varieties of grapes and ultimately new wines.

New Kaiser Permanente study, one of largest individual studies of the effects of alcohol on the risk of breast cancer, concludes it makes no difference whether a woman drinks red wine, white wine, beer or hard liquor, it is the alcohol itself (ethyl alcohol) and the quantity consumed that triggers the onset of cancer. The study of 70,033 multi-ethnic women is the first to look at whether alcohol types makes difference on breast cancer.

A gene responsible for the single most common cause of hearing loss among white adults, otosclerosis, has been identified for the first time, a scientist told the annual conference of the European Society of Human Genetics in Nice, France. Melissa Thys, from the Department of Medical Genetics, University of Antwerp, Belgium, said that this finding may be a step towards new treatments for otosclerosis, which affects approximately one in 250 people.

A multi-center research project to investigate severe asthma has found a key physiological difference between severe and non-severe forms of the disease, a finding that could help explain why those with severe asthma do not respond well to treatment. The study from the Severe Asthma Research Program has found that those with severe asthma are much more likely to show signs of "air trapping" in the lungs, a condition that prevents a full exhalation.

New, peer-reviewed results from the Hinode space mission ("Sunrise" in English) should help explain some long-standing mysteries of the Sun, such as the huge temperature difference between its relatively cool surface and its white-hot atmosphere, and the origins of the solar wind that blasts through the solar system and buffets planetary atmospheres. These findings appear in a special collection of 10 articles, by scientists in Japan, Europe and the United States, in the Dec. 7 issue of the journal Science.
