Galaxy survey focuses on 'pre-teen' years
03-05-2007 · EurekAlert!A massive project to generate an all-color map of the galaxies in a small area of sky is yielding new information about the universe's "pre-teen" years and the early evolution of galaxies and galaxy clusters. The UC Berkeley-led AEGIS survey has already generated 19 papers set for publication this spring, reporting a binary black hole at the core of one galaxy, new lensing galaxies, and information about our universe as it matured through early adolescence.

- Katrina victims increasingly depressed, traumatized, and suicidal as relief efforts drag on
10-31-2007 · EurekAlert!
According to the most comprehensive survey of people affected by Hurricane Katrina, results of which are being presented today to the US Senate, the percentage of pre-hurricane residents of the affected areas who have mental disorders has increased significantly compared to the situation five to eight months after the hurricane. These findings counter a more typical pattern from previous disasters where prevalence of mental disorders decreases as time passes.

03-06-2007 · EurekAlert!
Faced with the bewildering array of galaxies in the universe, from orderly spirals to chaotic mergers, it is hard to imagine a unifying principle that describes them all with mathematical precision. But that is just what astronomers have now discovered.

- Survey identifies teen online behaviors associated with online interpersonal victimization
02-05-2007 · EurekAlert!
Teens who talk to strangers online are more likely to become victims of online harassment than those who share their personal information on the Internet, according to a report in the February issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals. In addition, engaging in an overall pattern of various online behaviors is more closely linked to online interpersonal victimization than any specific behavior alone.

- New population of faint protogalaxies discovered
11-28-2007 · EurekAlert!
Carnegie astronomers have found a new population of faint protogalaxies by taking the most sensitive spectroscopic survey ever of a time when the universe was only 15 percent of its present age. These objects are the probable building blocks of galaxies today, including our own Milky Way. The discovery substantiates a popular theory of galaxy formation.

A large survey, made with ESO's VLT, has shed light on our Galaxy's ancestry. After determining the chemical composition of over 2000 stars in the four nearest dwarf galaxies to our own, astronomers have demonstrated fundamental differences in their make-up, casting doubt on the theory that these diminutive galaxies could ever have formed the building blocks of our Milky Way Galaxy.

- How does insulin influence resistin?
01-16-2008 · EurekAlert!
Insulin suppressed resistin secretion during 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes differentiation, which does not support a role for resistin in insulin resistance. In diet-induced obese rats, serum resistin level was negatively correlated to insulin sensitivity, not to serum insulin. So insulin is not a major regulator of resistin in vivo.
