A new study analyzing the economic implications of the Clinical Antipsychotic Trials of Intervention Effectiveness (CATIE) concludes that the older (first generation) antipsychotic medication perphenazine was less expensive and no less effective than the newer (second generation) medications used in the trial during initial treatment, suggesting that older antipsychotics still have a role in treating schizophrenia.

Data from a study at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden, show that women receive anti-TNFs -- very effective but expensive modern medications against this disease -- at a higher perceived level of disease activity, and when they are reporting more severe pain than their male counterparts.

Fifty-nine percent of patients receiving certolizumab pegol 200mg plus methotrexate, and 61 percent of patients receiving certolizumab pegol 400mg plus methotrexate every two weeks achieved a 20 percent improvement in symptoms (known as an American College of Rheumatology 20 Response) after 24 weeks' treatment, according to a study presented today at EULAR 2007, the Annual European Congress of Rheumatology in Barcelona, Spain. Only 14 percent of patients receiving methotrexate alone achieved an ACR20 response over the same period, highlighting the superiority of the treatment combination at both doses of certolizumab pegol in patients refractory to methotrexate.

The largest study to examine the effect of depression on HIV treatment appears in the online edition of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes. The study by Kaiser Permanente and Group Health found depression significantly worsens a patient's adherence to highly active antiretroviral therapy and clinical measures but that effective antidepressant medication reverses this outcome. The study looked at 3,359 HIV-infected patients to measure the effects of depression -- with and without SSRIs.
