A jet of molecular hydrogen arising from a forming high-mass star
03-07-2007 · EurekAlert!A team of European astronomers offer new evidence that high-mass stars could form in a similar way to low-mass stars, that is, from accretion of gas and dust through a disk surrounding the forming star. Their article, published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, reports the discovery of a jet of molecular hydrogen arising from a forming high-mass star located in the Omega nebula (M17).

- A&A special feature: XMM-Newton deciphers the magnetic physics around forming stars
05-31-2007 · EurekAlert!
Astronomy & Astrophysics is publishing a special feature this week dedicated to the XMM-Newton extended survey of the Taurus molecular cloud. One of the main results is the identification of unusual physical processes not known before in forming stars. These unprecedented observations suggest that the gas streams falling down onto the forming star and the jets being ejected from it both play major roles in the production of X-rays.

- A brown dwarf joins the jet-set
05-23-2007 · EurekAlert!
Jets of matter have been discovered around a very low mass "failed star," mimicking a process seen in young stars. This suggests that these "brown dwarfs" form in a similar manner to normal stars but also thatoutflows are driven out by objects as massive as hundreds of millions of solar masses down to Jupiter-sized objects.

- 'Heftier' atoms reduce friction at the nanoscale, study led by Penn researcher reveals
11-01-2007 · EurekAlert!
A research team led by a University of Pennsylvania mechanical engineer has discovered that friction between two sliding bodies can be reduced at the molecular, or nanoscale, level by changing the mass of the atoms at the surface. 'Heavier' atoms vibrate at a lower frequency, reducing energy lost during sliding.

01-08-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new image from the Hubble Space Telescope shows N90, one of the star-forming regions in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The rich populations of infant stars found here enable astronomers to examine star forming processes in an environment that is very different from that in our own Milky Way.

- Hubble yields direct proof of stellar sorting in a globular cluster
10-24-2006 · EurekAlert!
A seven-year study with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope has provided astronomers with the best observational evidence yet that globular clusters sort out stars according to their mass. Heavier stars slow down and sink to the cluster's core, while lighter stars pick up speed and move across the cluster to its periphery. This process, called "mass segregation," has long been suspected for globular star clusters, but has never before been directly seen in action.
