Preventing obesity in children -- research highlights physical activity levels
03-19-2007 · EurekAlert!A British study, involving 5,500 children and published in the latest issue of PLoS Medicine, used accurate methods to measure the "fat mass" of the children and the amount of physical activity they were taking. The researchers, based at the University of Bristol, concluded that low levels of activity, particularly moderate and vigorous activity, play an important role in the development of obesity.

The largest study of its kind, this research shows that childhood obesity risk rises with a pregnant woman's blood sugar level and untreated gestational diabetes doubles a child's risk of obesity. Authors looked at 20,000 mothers and children, and found treating gestational diabetes lowers the child's risk of obesity to same level of a mother with normal blood sugar levels.

A new study that exposed monkeys to moderate levels of alcohol and stress in pregnancy found increased sensitivity to touch in the monkeys' babies. Using a brain neuro-imaging technique, the researchers found that sensitivities to touch were related to changes in the brain chemical dopamine one area of the brain. Since sensitivity to touch in human children can lead to behavioral and emotional problems, this research has important implications for preventing childhood disorders.
