IceSAR campaign provides glimpse of future Sentinel-1 images over ice
03-20-2007 · European Space Agency (ESA)It is perhaps fitting that at the beginning of the International Polar Year, an ambitious airborne campaign is now underway and realising excellent results in the extreme north of Europe. The IceSAR campaign is in support of ESA's Sentinel-1 mission - which amongst other application areas will contribute to ice monitoring.

06-29-2007 · EurekAlert!
Using echo-sounding equipment to create images and maps of areas below the ocean floor, researchers have begun to unravel a new story about the Antarctic Ice Sheet.Images of areas below the Eastern Ross Sea, next to West Antarctica, provide evidence that the subcontinent was involved in the general growth of the Antarctic Ice Sheet as it formed many millions of years ago, according to scientists at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The National Science Foundation provided funding for the project.

- Radar opens new window into the ice for Antarctic scientists
10-16-2006 · EurekAlert!
Scientists are getting their first glimpse into the inner secrets of an ice shelf, thanks to the innovative application of a new radar technique developed by British Antarctic Survey (BAS). Getting a clearer view of how ice behaves is important because it will help scientists predict more accurately how the ice sheet will respond to future climate change. The results are published this week in the Journal of Glaciology.

- Woods Hole Research Center debuts new image mosaic that will strengthen global forest monitoring
11-27-2007 · EurekAlert!
Much of the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Bali will focus on monitoring tropical deforestation and the critical role of remote sensing systems in REDD mechanism development. Using data acquired by the Japanese Advanced Land Observing Satellite, WHRC scientists have completed the first-of-its-kind image mosaic for part of the Amazon. Images acquired globally over narrow timeframes provide for "snapshots" of deforestation, giving leverage to monitoring programs that hinge on timely, accurate forest observations.

New Hubble images have provided a dramatic glimpse of a large massive galaxy under assembly as smaller galaxies merge. This has commonly been thought to be the way galaxies grew in the young Universe, but now Hubble observations of the radio galaxy MRC 1138-262, nicknamed the "Spiderweb Galaxy," have shown dozens of star-forming satellite galaxies in the actual process of merging.
