LSU professor uncovers prehistoric hurricane activity

Hurricanes Katrina and Rita focused the international spotlight on the vulnerability of the US coastline. Fears that a "super-hurricane" could make a direct hit on a major city and cause even more staggering losses of life, land and economy triggered an outpouring of studies directed at every facet of this ferocious weather phenomenon. Now, an LSU professor takes us one step closer to predicting the future by drilling holes into the past.

Since the launch of the Human Genome Project, which released a first draft of the entire sequence of human DNA in 2001, many researchers have dedicated themselves to creating a library of comprehensive, species-specific genetic sequence "maps" available for study. Scientists at LSU recently took part in a multi-institutional effort spearheaded by the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard University to sequence the complete genome of the gray, short-tailed opossum, Monodelphis domestica.

Uncover the neural communication links involved in myelination, the process of protecting a nerve's axon, and it may become possible to reverse the breakdown of the nervous system's electrical transmissions in such disorders as multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries and diabetes. With $697,065 in grants from the NJ Commissions on Spinal Cord Injury and Brain Injury Research, Haesun Kim, biology professor at Rutgers, is working on gaining a better understanding of those links.
