SCAI leaders say courage results unlikely to change use of PCI

Results of the COURAGE trial, presented today at the American College of Cardiology Annual Scientific Session, are unlikely to alter the approach that interventional cardiologists take in treating most patients with chronic stable angina, say leaders from the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI), the leading professional society for interventional cardiologists in the United States.

Onchocerciasis is a parasitic infection brings about skin lesions and severe eye damage that might lead to irreversible blindness. A study published recently by IRD scientists, who monitored a cohort of patients treated with ivermectin, the sole drug used for curing infected people, found fertility-change associated genetic selection in parasite populations. Although the results do not prove with absolute certainty that Onchocerca volvulus is steadily becoming resistance to ivermectin, they do show that certain parasites are more sensitive to treatment than others.

The document has been endorsed by 12 medical societies representing more than a dozen countries, including the Asia-Pacific region, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Egypt, Great Britain, India, Italy, Latvia, New Zealand, Poland and Venezuela.

An eye tracking experiment published in the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication revealed that college student internet users have an inherent trust in Google's ability to rank results by their true relevance to the query. When participants selected a link from Google's result pages, their decisions were strongly biased towards links higher in position, even if that content was less relevant to the search query.
