It's only a game of chance
03-27-2007 · EurekAlert!Cells in the central nervous system tend to communicate with each other via a wave of electrical signals that travel along neurons. The question is: How does the brain translate this information to allow us to perceive and understand the world? It was believed that these signals generated patterns that the brain could interpret; however, new research shows that such patterns may be random. These studies will contribute to the ongoing debate on neuronal coding.

12-19-2006 · EurekAlert!
How people might play the popular game show -- whether they'd accept an offer for quick cash or hold out for the chance to win $1 million -- probably has less to do with what’s inside each briefcase than what's inside each contestant's brain, suggests a study. While researchers didn't study players of the game, their research in normal adults provides new insight about reward-based decision making and may have implications for understanding and treating addiction.

- Slow but sure -- Burned forest lands regenerate naturally
04-04-2007 · EurekAlert!
A new study of forest lands that burned in the 1990s in northern California and southwestern Oregon has concluded there is a "fair to excellent" chance that an adequate level of conifers will regenerate naturally, in sites that had no manual planting or other forest management. Whether lands should be planted and weed competition controlled is more a question of short-term timber production, tree species control and forest management goals than the regeneration of the forest, the study indicated.

- Can cancer drugs combine forces?
08-16-2007 · EurekAlert!
Individuals with chronic myeloid leukemia are treated first with imatinib (Gleevec) and then, if their cancer returns, with dasatinib (SPRYCEL). However, a new study in the Journal of Clinical Investigation suggests that CML patients should receive a combination of the drugs when they are first diagnosed, rather than receiving the drugs sequentially, because it might decrease the chance of the cancer returning, or, at the very least, increase the time before a relapse occurs.
