The question is: How does the brain translate this information to allow us to perceive and understand the world? It was believed that these signals generated patterns that the brain could interpret; however, new research shows that such patterns may be random. These studies will contribute to the ongoing debate on neuronal coding.

Children who sleep less are at greater risk of being overweight, according to the first nationally representative, longitudinal investigation of the relationship between sleep, Body Mass Index and overweight status in children 3 to 18. "Even an hour of sleep makes a big difference," said Northwestern University researcher Emily Snell. "An additional hour a night reduced young children’s chance of being overweight from 36 percent to 30 percent."

A new study of forest lands that burned in the 1990s in northern California and southwestern Oregon has concluded there is a "fair to excellent" chance that an adequate level of conifers will regenerate naturally, in sites that had no manual planting or other forest management. Whether lands should be planted and weed competition controlled is more a question of short-term timber production, tree species control and forest management goals than the regeneration of the forest, the study indicated.

However, a new study in the Journal of Clinical Investigation suggests that CML patients should receive a combination of the drugs when they are first diagnosed, rather than receiving the drugs sequentially, because it might decrease the chance of the cancer returning, or, at the very least, increase the time before a relapse occurs.
