New research at the University of Chicago finds evidence for a clever way that people manage to alleviate the pain of loneliness: They create people in their surroundings to keep them company. "Biological reproduction is not a very efficient way to alleviate one's loneliness, but you can make up people when you're motivated to do so," said Nicholas Epley, Assistant Professor of Behavioral Science at the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business.

The project DRIVASCO, whose participants are the University of Granada, the German company Hella & Hueck and other European research centres, aims to design intelligent cars which make driving easier and safer. This study managed to translate images into useful information which can make driving easier thanks to a system of night vision cameras with vision which extends further than the distance covered by car headlights.

Chemists at the University of Pennsylvania have created a new process for free radical polymerization, the chemical reaction responsible for creating an enormous array of everyday plastic products, from Styrofoam cups to PVC tubing to car parts.
